Let’s face it, getting anywhere in life or in your career of choice is tough let alone trying to breaking into the music industry and crack the secret code to stardom.
Self promotion and understanding how music promotion companies work is without doubt a key factor in the success of any artist’s career.
Without doubt, one of the silliest gigs and tours mistakes I ever made in my music industry career was when I was 19 years old. I put up some money to help tour a guy called Alex Patterson from a group from the UK called The Orb.
What a mistake that was….
As some read this headline, most artists and bands are probably wondering why the hell playing rock gigs on a Monday night would be beneficial in any way to their career?
I can hear them all saying right now, is this guy out of his mind?
Why would I or any band want to play rock gigs or any gigs for that matter on a Monday night in front of absolutely nobody? Where’s the logic in that?
The music industry is riddled with so many different types of people. You’ve got agents, music producers, labels, distributors, a/r guys, publicists, street teams, engineers, managers, PR people, publicists…. The list goes on.
However, when you book your next studio session and you lay out your life savings to pay for it, you better know the answer to the following question -
Starting any sort of new venture can be quite stressful and time consuming let alone starting an independent record label.
If your mind is made up and you are sure about going down this path, then you must firstly be congratulated. There are not to many other businesses out there that are as difficult as trying to promote other people’s art.

Hi, my name is Daniel Kohn but most people call me Kohnny – I’ve been involved in the music industry since the ripe old age of 13 (have a read of the about me page for my story, I promise it makes an interesting read).
I decided to put this site together to help anyone out there with a burning desire to break into the music industry and get their music out there and understand the fundamentals of how the whole game works.
Breaking into the music industry and getting the whole world to listen and fall in love with your music can be as difficult and complicated as splitting the Red Sea…..a damn hard task!
Let’s face it, if you don’t know the rules and how to play the game, that vision in your head of fame stardom and fortune will always just be that……a pipe dream in your head.
One thing that is very clear and obvious is that the state of the music industry today is clearly in dire straights. The value of CD’s now have equal weighting to the value of toilet paper as a commodity, while at the same time the competitive nature of the industry has heated up with new social medias and distribution mechanisms as a result of the Internet.
Is it impossible to break through to the other side? Definitely not!
Am I wasting my time hoping to try and make a living from my art? Definitely not!
Can I make a career out of my music without needing a major record deal? 100% you can!
My vision for this site is to create a melting pot of information for motivated and curious musicians (hopefully like yourself) who are trying to crack the “breaking into the music industry” code and wanting to understand how all the pieces of the puzzle fit with each other.
