Ok, so you’ve probably ended up on this page because of the catchy headline. Correct?
Admit it you want to know what comes after the “until…” part in the headline…..
Well without keeping you in suspense the end of the sentence is this -
Do not start a record label until you realize that a record label needs to be run like a business.
There you have it, plain and simple. You want to start a record label? Make sure that everything you do, all the decisions you make and every penny you spend takes into the following question -
Is this going to help my business grow and become more successful?
When you start a record label and do not ask yourself this question constantly, you are sure to run into problems.
Unfortunately, it’s extremely “cool” to be able to tell people that you run a record label and that your in the music business, however starting a record label is no easy feet and if your in it for the wrong reasons or have the wrong motivations, you might be wasting your time.
You definitely need to be passionate about the music you wish to promote and the bands you want to work with but when you start a record label, you must realize that you are starting a business and at the end of the day, regardless of how good your intentions are, business is business.
If you don’t really agree with my perspective, consider the fact that this whole industry is called the music business or music industry - both words connote some sort of commerce. The terms industry and music are commerce words that should never be mistaken for anything else.
The simple point here is that when you start a record label you will be forced to make new decisions all day every day and if you do not realize that ultimately you are trying to run a business and turn a profit, your days as a record executive might be shorter than you expected.
